Untill the first week of comics, Casey was called Pat,
which is what I named him when I drew this:
I changed the name to Casey because I have a fairly strict 'no using my
friend's names for characters' policy. At the time I didn't have any
friends named Pat, but now I do, so I had to change his name. In my
mind he will probably always be called Pat, and I may even slip up from
time to time and call him that in a comic.
I still like a lot of the design from this drawing, and I think he really
ended up influencing the look of Casey much more than the supposed 'final
character design'. That's not to say this design was perfect. You
can see that I had erased a ponytail there, which would have ruined Casey's
look. I also got rid of the cross on his ear, mostly because the character
was never supposed to be religious, and it interferes with the universe I've
set out, where religion has less to do with vampires than in the standard
lore. The elbow pad had to go, because it made me feel like I was ripping
off the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This design also features the beginning of a little tradition of making
reference to other vampire stories on Casey's shirts. This one is
a slogan from
Sluggy Freelance, but
it disn't really work as the first shirt for him to be wearing, seeing as
he's trying to be a slayer in the first scene, and Sam is a vampire.
This drawing was done at the same time as the second to last Saul drawing,
and Casey was in the few pages of rough script that I drew up for that book,
but it is lost, probably forever.
Here's a more recent drawing of Casey, but as you can see, it really has
less to do with his final design than the first drawing.
I guess the only thing I really kept from this design was the general
look of his shirt, which is kind of baseball-tee like. In the continuing
tradition of vampire-oriented shirts, this one has 'the Count' from Sesame
Street. This is not really clear though, because I am almost completely
unable to draw recognizable pop culture figures, famous people, or people
I know. This lack of ability to do caricatures will probably keep
me out of a job as a political or satirical cartoonist forever. Looking
closely at it, he reminds me more of 'the Penguin' from Batman than anyone
on Sesame Street.
