This is the first and only character design sketch for Luna. I came
up with the character only a couple of weeks before the comic started running,
and I'm pretty happy with how well she integrated into an already existing
plot.
Luna really started out just as an artistic idea, which was "cute girl with
a bunch of moths, because moths are neat." And thus, Luna was born.
I almost named her Mothflower, but that's really just a painful pun
on the Mossflower or Bunches of Rodents in a dark ages setting series of
books, which I'm not even that fond of. Thus, I didn't want to go permenantly
naming a character after them, however indirectly.
Luna's physical appearance is loosely based off of a pornstar. Scandalous,
isn't it? But basing your characters off of real people is a method
I learned from reading the earlier works of Brian Micheal Bendis. It's
a good trick. When you can't think of an original look, just find a
picture of someone and draw them into the character, and you'll have it.
And since I can't draw recognizable faces to save my life, there's
no chance of anyone suing me for using their face without permission.
Honestly, there's not much else to say here, as I'm avoiding putting character
information on these pages so as not to give away the plot.
My favorite moth in this drawing is the big one just off of her right elbow.
